As a Risk and Claims Specialist Term, you will use your expertise to investigate, evaluate, organize, adjust, and negotiate property and casualty claims under the Airports Authority's operational and construction insurance programs and assist in providing training and technical guidance to employees and managers to reduce and mitigate Airports Authority risk exposure to financial loss.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Handles property and casualty claims with delegated authority to process and negotiate tort and property claim settlements up to a limit established by the Risk Manager for each type of claim. Provides recommended settlement amounts to the Claims Program Manager above the delegated authority. Analyzes the cost of settling claims versus the cost of proceeding to litigation and pursues subrogation to recover fund costs.
Provides technical guidance and training for claims or other risk management-related matters.
Investigates and verifies facts and details of claims; interview claimants and witnesses; and obtains police and witness reports, medical information, repair costs, photographs, drawings, and documents.
Helps ensure the Official Custodian of Record maintains chain of custody for evidence.
Enters data, documents claims, researches claim history, and creates and maintains files and records.
Uses Risk Management Information System (RMIS) to review claims-related information. Prepares reports of claim activities and statistics for management.
Works with the Claims Program Manager, Safety Program Managers, insurance carriers, outside attorneys, adjusters, appraisers, and the Office of General Counsel to document damages, assess liability, and resolve claims and develop risk management strategies
Conducts research to include reviewing leases, contracts, and agreements to identify potential exposure to liability; prepares and analyzes data for benchmarking and risk mapping efforts; and reviews insurance carrier claims data and loss reports to identify potential opportunities to reduce costs and minimize liabilities.
Represents the Department at meetings with construction managers, engineers, insurers, consultants, and others to verify or discuss claims, financial reserves, and related issues.
Makes presentations and conducts training on risk management strategy and claims policies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Five years of progressively responsible experience in all aspects of claims management, including handling first- or third-party commercial claims and administering and adjusting property and casualty insurance claims.
Knowledge of and ability to apply claims interviewing and investigating procedures, legal and medical terminology, insurance claims adjusting, principles of contributory negligence, and process requirements of administrative hearings, mediations, and litigation to claims management.
Knowledge of and ability to apply property and casualty claims laws, regulations, case precedents, and investigative requirements concerning tort and personal property claims to claims management.
Skill in using a computer and modern office suite software, with emphasis on using an automated risk management information system.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding personal and confidential employee information.
Ability to perform detailed analyses of data and information and make recommendations.
Skill in written and oral communication.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in risk management for a busy commercial airport or similar environment.
Professional Designation as an Associate in Claims from the American Institute of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters.
A bachelor's degree in risk management, Business Administration, or related field.
Knowledge of and ability to apply the Virginia Workers' Compensation Act to claims management.
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED
A state driver's license in good standing.
NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS
Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
May work outdoors and moves about the airport complexes and areas under construction to conduct investigations.
May stoop, bend, grasp, and lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds when visiting work sites.
May be exposed to adverse weather conditions, dust, fumes, excessive noise, and hazardous substances when conducting inspections. Wears personal protective equipment as needed.
Is subject to holdover and recall on a 24-hour basis and night and weekend work to investigate incidents and for emergencies.
Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
