Job Description

Stericycle, Inc. seeks a Network Engineering Lead. Position duties include: 

  • Lead network reliability, performance, and security projects, and evaluate existing network infrastructure. This includes upgrades, migrations, and technology refresh initiatives, routing and switching, resiliency, cloud connectivity, perimeter network defense, and operations escalations, ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery accordance with service level agreements.
  • Oversee deployment and configuration of network components, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and related infrastructure. Remain accountable for platform/product management.
  • Assist in design, develop, and lead implementation of network architectures that align with the organization's strategic goals, emphasizing scalability, security, and performance optimization.
  • Facilitate all business, functional, and technical requirements for the network service suite.
  • Lead development and deployment of new network technologies within Stericycle’s network program. Lead day-to-day implementation, monitoring and operational support of hardware, software, and managed solutions projects.
  • Implement robust security measures across the network infrastructure, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and encryption mechanisms to safeguard sensitive data.
  • For each enterprise network service, contribute to platform strategies and multi-year roadmaps that will feed annual project portfolio planning.
  • Proactively monitor network performance, identifying areas for improvement, capacity planning, and implementing optimizations to maintain optimal efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology and business unit personnel to ensure alignment on enterprise service direction, and platforms that support them.
  • Lead incident response and system stability issues; may include involvement outside of regular work hours, and responsiveness is expected.
  • Advocate for, recommend, promote, and consult on the use of existing platform functionality to meet current business challenges.
  • Utilize advanced troubleshooting techniques to diagnose and resolve intricate network issues, minimizing downtime and ensuring uninterrupted operations.
  • Lead, mentor, and coach team of network engineers, fostering professional growth, skill development, and adherence to best practices.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of solutions per agreed product roadmaps and/or business requirements within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture to develop and execute Product Roadmaps, and plan with IT and business for adoption of future functionality.
  • Accountable to establish key metrics needed to formulate a continuous improvement service culture.
  • Establish strong relationships with third party vendors/suppliers, leveraging those partnerships, and hold them accountable to high quality products and services in use.
  • Engage with vendors and partners to evaluate new technologies, assess hardware and software solutions, and manage vendor relationships to ensure reliable network services.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and operational procedures.
  • Play a key role in incident response and disaster recovery plans, providing expertise during network-related incidents to minimize impact and swiftly restore services.
  • Stay informed about emerging network technologies, trends, and best practices, contributing insights to the development of the organization's network strategy.
  • Implement changes to network environment while adhering to established change management processes to ensure operational stability.
  • Conduct training sessions for team to enhance technical skills and share knowledge across the organization.
  • Use a variety of tools and technologies in performing job duties including ASA, IPS/IDS, IPSEC, DNS, DHCP, web security, TACACS+, VPN, NAC, Cisco routers, switches, and firewalls, network security platforms (Palo Alto), monitoring technologies (SolarWinds), Windows and Unix Servers, interior and exterior routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP platforms and technologies.


WORK LOCATION: Job based out of Stericycle’s headquarters in Bannockburn, Illinois (2355 Waukegan Road, Bannockburn, IL 60015). Employee may work remotely from anywhere in the United States.  


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or similar information technology field, plus 7 years of networking experience (any job title) working with firewalls, network authentication, content filtering, and wireless and network load balancing. Experience must include at least 3 years work in a technical lead capacity, providing guidance to team members on technical issues. CCNP Enterprise (f/k/a CCNP Routing & Switching) certification also required.
