Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses patient health status utilizing developmental framework to analyze data and formulate nursing diagnosis.

Gathers pertinent data about patients in a systematic and continuous manner from all available resources.

Assess patients biological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs based on knowledge of normal growth and development.

Analyzes collected data to formulate nursing diagnosis.

Designs nursing care plan that will contribute to the achievement of patients' health goals. Completes nursing care plans for all assigned patients in a timely manner.

Identifies patient health goals which relate to the treatment goals. Prioritizes patient needs/problems and documents such. Documents objectives for patient goal achievement which are behaviorally stated and time-limited. Identifies and documents patient strengths and support systems when setting goals and objectives.

Implements care plans by providing direct assistance, delegating appropriate nursing activities, and supervising members of the nursing staff. Employs principles of group leadership, communication, problem solving, interviewing, and crisis intervention to carry through nursing interventions.

Establishes purposeful, goal-directed relationships with patients. Actively supports patients' growth to more mature levels of development. Helps patients understand the growth process and the effects of family and environmental stress. Carries out physician orders in an accurate and timely manner.

Demonstrates knowledge of medications, side effects, and toxic symptoms in daily practice. Medications are administered and safely stored in accordance with the policy and procedures.

Evaluates and revises plan of nursing care according to the continuing assessment of patient progress towards meeting the goals and objectives. Evaluates effectiveness of nursing interventions weekly and documents such in patients' medical records. Utilizes nursing consultation in planning and evaluating nursing care for patients with complex problems. Documents nursing care plans according to the Medical Record guidelines.

Elicits active participation of patient and/or family in planning nursing care. Utilizes and documents patient/family participation in care planning.

Plans and provides for patient and families learning activities related to the development of self-care knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Establishes and documents working relationship with family for the purpose of orientation, support, and guidance.

Collaborates with other disciplines to utilize hospital and ancillary resources to meet patient health needs. Recognizes patient needs/problems outside of the scope of nursing practice and refers appropriately to other disciplines.

Provides safe and therapeutic environmental conditions that will encourage or induce patient to assume self-care responsibilities.

Functions as a charge nurse and assumes responsibility for management of patient care and unit environment. Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures. Provides leadership in shift management and in crisis situation in an effective manner. Sets priorities for nursing interventions to assure patients' physical and emotional safety.

Assists Senior Nurse/Nurse Manager to provide clinical experience for nursing students on the unit and participates in education of other disciplines relative to nursing practice. Provides nursing consultation to nursing colleagues and other disciplines throughout the hospital.

Participates in planning for the presentation of continuing education on the unit and serves on nursing committees.

May initiate restraint and seclusion, and/or perform evaluations/re-evaluations of patients in restraint or seclusion to assess their readiness for discontinuation or establish the need to secure a new order

Proper documentation in electronic records system and health information technology software

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate from an accredited nursing program.

Current license to practice nursing in the District of Colombia; Current CPR certification.

One year experience working in psychiatric inpatient or residential setting with adolescents or children ages14 - 18 and adults ages 18-65+.
