POSITION SUMMARY:

BMC Research Operations strives to provide excellent service to the BMC research community through our deep expertise, attitude of continual learning, responsiveness, and pride in our work.

In this newly developed role, the Sponsored Programs Business Partner is an important and critical team member responsible for the financial management of an assigned sponsored programs portfolio supporting multiple PIs and Departments.

The SP Business Partner is responsible for providing post-award financial and administrative services to a diverse set of funding types including federal, state, industry, foundation, donor, institutional, chargeback, and clinical trials. The SPBP is responsible for sound fiscal oversight and financial compliance: serving as the representative/liaison between faculty/researchers, department administrators, and sponsors. Will provide direct support and advise faculty/researchers on the fiscal management of sponsored funds.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Portfolio Management (post-award):

  • Works effectively with each investigator to proactively manage budget to actual tracking, provide regular projection and project summary reports to investigators, ensure spending adheres to budget, sponsor and organization guidelines and track milestones/receivables for milestone agreements within portfolio.
  • Act in the capacity of subject matter expert to provide faculty/researchers with guidance on and interpretation of federal, state, and local as well as all sponsor regulations, terms, and conditions as they relate to the life cycle administration of sponsored portfolio.
  • Responsible for the financial management of sponsored and institutional funds portfolio management. Responsible for ensuring all vendor and sub-award invoices are tracked, reviewed, approved, and submitted promptly for payment.
  • Coordinate with the Sponsored Programs Finance Office to manage project effort and reporting processes to ensure accurate payroll distribution to each project within the portfolio.

  • Work effectively with each investigator before the project and budget end date, to ensure all compensation and non-compensation items are booked accurately for each project.
  • Keep abreast of regulations, external and internal policies, and procedures governing the sponsored programs administration. Contribute to improving workflow, current practices, business process, and policy.
  • Procurement: Approve and/or initiate purchase requests for investigators following BMC's procedures. Verify funds are available, expenses are allowable and correctly allocated in a timely manner.
  • Human Resources: Onboarding - conduct financial analysis to determine availability of funding, assist in the development of job descriptions, post positions, approve salary offers, submit, and manage payroll allocations that aligns with portfolio funding.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • CRA preferred

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5-7 years of progressive post-award sponsored research financial and administration and oversight of federal and non-federal awards in an academic medical center.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Computer literacy: Proficient with new applications and software programs. Proficiency with Excel/Google Sheets preferred.
  • Customer Service: Provides excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrated proficiency with listening, inquiry, follow-up, and problem-solving skills.
  • Deadline focused: Ability to work with a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines.
  • Financial: Proficient with budgeting principles, including projections and the integration of multiple awards and types with varying project periods.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Proficient in cultivating relationships with faculty, research staff, the department's administration team, and central departments.
  • Operations and processes: Proficient in directing faculty and researchers to appropriate departmental and institutional policies and resources, including for issues or queries outside the standard scope of direct responsibility.
