Job Description:

Plans, directs, and coordinates activities of large and small scale client projects which involve performing analysis, research, and calculations within naval architecture/marine engineering design. Prepare reports for regulatory, standards, and investigative consulting projects. Work under direction of other engineers on the activities of large- and small- scale client projects involving mechanical engineering issues and related technical subjects in support of industrial consulting projects, insurance investigations, litigation analysis and support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviews, and in some cases formulates project proposals or plans to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project.
  • Makes determination to take or decline projects based on all variables.
  • Conducts and directs field investigations as needed.
  • Performs engineering analyses, calculations, and research.
  • Works with clients to assess their objectives, perform fundamental mechanical analyses for a wide array of applications and industries.
  • Documents analytical findings in reports and makes presentations to clients.
  • Executes tests and analysis in support of scientific investigations and experiments.
  • Conducts engineering analyses and technical investigations of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Prepares technical reports; provides professional opinions and advice for clients or others.
  • Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems.
  • Confers with project staff to outline work plan and assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority.
  • Directs and coordinates project activities and personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget.
  • Reviews, or in some cases formulates status reports and modifies schedules or plans as required.
  • Works effectively within a multidisciplinary consultancy team
  • Testify in court on behalf of clients.

Education Requirements:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science/Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering; or approved equivalent from accredited university.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in the above degree areas preferred.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 10+ years of professional experience.
  • Excellent technical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience in naval architecture/marine engineering design and analysis.
  • Experience in evaluating technologies and manufacturing operations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Registered mechanical professional engineer (P.E.) or possess the ability to become registered.

Computer Skills:

  • Familiarity with various pre- and post- processing software tools. Expertise in either commercial solvers or programming languages used for high performance computing (Fortran, C, C++, Python).

Other Skills/Abilities or Other Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with product engineering and components a plus.
  • Experience with analysis of hull hydrodynamics and stability.
  • Knowledge of fundamental computational methods (Finite Element Analysis and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics)
  • System design and failure analysis, including power and/or process piping.
  • Fracture mechanics and other advanced knowledge of the mechanics of materials.
  • Ability to interact with clients in a professional manner and develop business both internally and externally.
  • A team player actively engaging others in accomplishing project work and office goals both within their home office as well as across offices throughout ESI.
  • Must be able to work or travel on weekends and holidays as required.
