The College of Applied Human Sciences is currently accepting applications for an Employment Service Specialist- Job Accommodation Network.

What you'll do:

  • Provide technical information to JAN customers on various workplace accommodation options including but not limited to use of various assistive technologies, services, and techniques in approaching work. Determines strategies to solve customers' challenges. Provides basic information about laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and responds to inquiries regarding Titles II and III of the ADA.
  • Answers telephone and internet chat from JAN customers. Previews emails from JAN customers. Route all to appropriate staff using JAN protocol and case documentation system. Conducts and document intake interview with JAN customer.
  • Provides information and referral services to JAN customers including individuals with disabilities, and their representatives.
  • Obtains technical information from product manufacturers to satisfy specific inquiries about accommodation implementation.
  • Updates and populates databases of products and organizations with assistance from Program Specialist and supervision by Senior and Lead Consultants.
  • Participates in JAN research effort by acting as recruiter with JAN customer
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in rehabilitation counseling, human resources, industrial and labor relations, social work, or a related field.
  • One or more years:
    • Experience working with individuals with disabilities in prescribed specialty area (motor, sensory or cognitive disabilities and limitations.
    • Experience in providing information concerning the Americans with Disabilities Act and related legislation as to how it relates to employment.
    • Experience in communicating with individuals of all education levels both over the telephone and in writing.
  • Ability to provide information concerning the Americans with Disabilities Act and related legislation as to how it relates to employment.
  • Knowledge of the rehabilitation process individuals with disabilities may experience in seeking services from individual communities, government programs and insurance systems.
  • Knowledge of various assistive technologies for people with disabilities in prescribed specialty area.
  • Skilled in the use of various database systems, e-mail and internet searching.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse constituency.
  • Ability to effectively articulate complex information to individual of all education level via telephone and in writing.
  • Broad knowledge of disability issues pertaining to prescribed specialty area.
  • Knowledge of quality customer service standards and procedures.
  • Skilled at organizing resources for effective and efficient provision of referral information to customers.
  • Knowledge of federal resources regarding disability in the federal workforce.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team of diverse skill levels and expertise.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Skills in the operation of a PC and in particular MS WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint. Good typing skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships and to relate effectively to all levels of employees.
  • Analytical skills sufficient to research problem situations and to develop logical resolutions for both internal and external customers.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure at all times, including stressful situations.
