The MGH CCIB DNA Core, founded in 1995, is a research core laboratory within the Center for Computational and Integrative Biology of Massachusetts General Hospital. Utilizing advanced instrumentation and expertise, this state-of-the-art facility provides a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge services in the fields of molecular biology, genomics, and laboratory automation. Services include Next-Generation Sequencing applications, conventional Sanger Sequencing, Mouse Genotyping, and Laboratory Automation of various processes for research purposes.

The Research Technologist will assist with various NGS services (Complete Plasmid Sequencing, Complete Amplicon Sequencing, CRISPR Amplicon Sequencing, Viral Genome Sequencing and 16S Sequencing) utilizing the Illumina MiSeq platform. Will also assist in the continued development and daily operation of our Oxford Nanopore-based Rapid Plasmid Sequencing service. Will work very independently in a collaborative and fast-paced team environment, and interact with researchers using our services.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Executes routine to complex molecular biology based experiments
  • Develop new and/or modifications of existing assay techniques, experimental protocols, or new procedures, including for novel applications and assays
  • Designs experiments independently
  • Assists Investigator with determining the most suitable methodology
  • Performs basic design and modification of protocols
  • Synthesizes and interprets results
  • Prepares written and/or verbal status reports
  • Uses statistical and graphic summaries
  • Orients and trains new Research Technicians
  • Maintains various electronic inventory databases
  • Makes full use of an electronic project management tool to track and bill tasks
  • Prepares lab reagents, chemicals and other needed materials
  • Operates lab instruments and equipment, troubleshooting when needed
  • Writes and implements standard operation procedures (SOPs)
  • For specific research services, works as a liaison between core laboratory and customers
  • Performs independent literature searches
  • Organizes and presents findings at lab meetings and/or to clients
  • Maintains and orders supplies
  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
  • Participates in laboratory safety and upkeep, leading initiatives as needed
Qualifications

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to display initiative to introduce innovation to research studies
  • Analytical skills and ability to resolve technical problems
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines
  • Superior organization skills
  • Molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, and gel electrophoresis
  • Next-Generation Sequencing using Illumina instruments such as MiSeq
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Functions with speed, precision, and an understanding of theory behind tests/procedures

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology or similar field

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years of directly related work experience required
  • Molecular biology experience preferred
  • Minimum 6 months experience with Next-Generation Sequencing preferred
