Provides, and is accountable for, patient care according to the philosophy and standards of the Department of Pediatrics and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing NP practices. Executes and evaluates treatment techniques within the scope of NP practice to assess and manage the patient population; demonstrates advanced problem solving skills in all aspects of medical and nursing assessment, care and treatment. Utilizes appropriate clinical skills to integrate and implement the nursing process with the plan of care. Incumbent functions as a clinical resource for the patient, consistently providing direction and support to ensure a focus in the team goals and patient driven outcomes. The NP functions within the role expectations of his/her area and delegates duties to other caregivers as required.

Patient Care Management

1. Provides comprehensive patient care in alignment with the Pediatric Allergy clinical team and in accordance with the nursing process and practice standards.

2. Diagnose medical conditions and plans and orders medical consultation, interventions and plans based on assessment and protocols under the direction of, and in consultation/collaboration with, a supervising physician or designee.

3. Evaluates and analyzes the patient's response to disease processes and therapeutic interventions and alters the plan as needed.

4. Documents all assessment data, orders, interventions, results and evaluations within the patient's medical record per established standards.

5. Provides information, education, and support to patients and families and includes them in planning care and discharge planning.

6. Serves as a resource person to members of the multidisciplinary team, to facilitate and coordinate patient care delivery based on expertise in area of specialty.

7. Supervises food and drug challenges and oral immunotherapy (OIT) administration during outpatient clinic sessions, collaborating with the clinical nursing staff to ensure safe clinical care.

8. Participates in the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement programs, standards of practice, and policies and procedures.
9. Coordinates nursing care activities in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team to facilitate achievement of patient goals.
10. Support and coordinate ancillary nursing staff to achieve established performance goals.
11. Completes nursing assessment accurately and timely in accordance with practice standards.
12. Develops and implements Plan of Care reflecting the needs and goals of the patient.
13. Documentation in Epic is consistently complete, accurate, timely and legible according to departmental policies and procedures.
14. Medications are administered safely according to professional standards of practice and nursing policies and procedures.
15. Epic Encounters are closed within the mandated timeframe benchmark established by the hospital (currently within 72 hours of date of service).
16. Complete patient/insurance paperwork as needed.
17. Communicates with referring primary pediatrician or other referring providers on the care plan and/or other relevant clinical information.
18. Perform academic roles and research as applicable to achieve established goals.
19. Perform additional department, organization or network activities per established objectives.
20. Participate in program and professional development; foster collaboration and resource sharing among programs.
21. Maintains clinical competency, professional skills, and knowledge through experiences and formal continuing education programs and independent learning activities.
22. Completes mandatory education/competency testing.
23. Participates in the interdisciplinary team process at team conferences and other team meetings and offers input into team decision making.
24. Responsible for maintenance of all certifications/licensures required to fulfill duties of the position.
25. Facilitates communication with providers outside of MGH regarding outpatient follow-up and care coordination. Applies clinical knowledge to determine the necessity of outside appointments to prioritize management of care within the MGH.

• Graduate of a Masters-level Nurse Practitioners program and licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Massachusetts

* Current NP certification granted by a Board recognized certifying organization

* Eligible for prescriptive practice

* BLS required (or secured within the first three months of employment). PALS certification preferred.
