Research Technician



The University of Pittsburgh's Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Research Technician. The Research Technician will be engaged in studying bacterial metabolism and biofilm formation in vitro and in tissue samples. Ideally, the successful candidate will be familiar with basic bacteriology techniques and with laboratory maintenance tasks such as pouring plates, making solutions, and handling glassware. Candidates familiar with microscopy and with analyzing microscopy data are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong computer and basic statistical skills are important, as is the ability to analyze, organize, interpret, and present data both verbally and in writing. Some experience in a laboratory, specifically with molecular biology, is desired. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. There is the expectation that the technician will have to work occasional evenings or weekends. This position is located at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment. Essential Functions

* Performs a variety of laboratory experiments such as basic bacteriology culturing, molecular techniques, and related technical functions, testing, troubleshooting, and analysis. Ensures conformity to specifications. * Prepares reagents and media. * Oversees supply management: ordering, procurement, tracking estimates, and receiving items. * Operates and maintains applicable laboratory equipment for job functions. * Keeps detailed, accurate, and timely data and log books. Organizes and documents results. * Maintains, calibrates, cleans, and tests sterility of laboratory equipment.


Physical Effort

Maximum lifting of up to 20 lbs., with frequent lifting/carrying of up to 10 lbs. or a negligible amount. Significant walking or standing may be required or may involve sitting with a degree of pushing and pulling.
