Position Summary

The Athletic Trainer I will fill an essential role in the Student Health, Counseling & Wellness Services' (SHCWS) Athletic Training Departments and works closely with coaches and others in Intercollegiate Athletics (IA) to effectively perform athletic training duties and functions important to ensure the health and safety of the student-athletes.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,500 per month - $5,862 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,012 per month - $7,743 per month

Department Information

At Student Health, Counseling, and Wellness Services (SHCWS), we support all aspects of student wellness to improve overall health and promote lifetime wellness through collaboration, education, and innovation. Our integrated approach to healthcare goes beyond treating illnesses. Our team of health and wellness professionals work collaboratively to ensure our students have access to top quality care that supports their physical, mental, emotional, and basic needs. SHCWS is accredited through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses' governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.

Abilities:

Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. Incumbents must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Education:

Equivalent to bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

License and Certifications:

Possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer. Some positions may require a valid California driver's license

Required Qualifications
  1. Experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer
  2. Current certification, or ability to obtain certification, in cardiopulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) and First Aid
  3. Possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer. Some positions may require a valid California driver's license
  4. Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  5. Strong organizational skills including the ability to maintain records
  6. Ability to assist in monitoring the work of student athletic trainers
  7. Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in difficult situations
  8. Ability to maintain confidentiality
  9. Computer skills- Experience working with an Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  10. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community

Physical Requirements:
  1. Ability to frequently move up to 40 pounds

Work Schedule Requirement:
  1. Ability to travel as needed
  2. Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends

Condition of Employment:
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Minimum two (2) years of experience as a certified athletic trainer in Intercollegiate Athletics
  2. Master's Degree in Athletic Training or Related Field
  3. Experience in a collegiate athletic setting, preferably Division I, with both men's and women's sports.
  4. Eligible to become an Approved Preceptor for the Athletic Training Education Program
